Editorial Reviews:
Product Description "In an age when the Humanities are being neglected more than perhaps than at any time since the Middle Ages, and when men's minds are turning more than ever before to the practical and material, it does not suffice to make pleas, however eloquent and convincing, for the safeguarding and further enjoyment of our greatest heritage from the past. Means must be found to place these treasures within the reach of all who care for the finer things of life. The mechanical and social achievements of our day must not blind our eyes to the fact that, in all that relates to man, his nature and aspirations, we have added little or nothing to what has been so finely said by the great men of old." James Loeb September 1, 1912 "The Life of Apollonius of Tyana", published c.220 CE. Selected articles from the English translation of F.C. Conybeare, the Loeb Classical Library, Edition 1912

Customer Reviews: Very interesting November 21, 2009 B. Smith (Hong Kong) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a very interesting book that deserves more attention. It is the story of Apollonius as he travels around the Mediterranean world, to Egypt and even to India where he meets kings and sages from whom he learns and who at the same time are impressed by his wisdom and his powers. He even manages to vanish into thin air when threatened by the Roman emperor.
There are many similarities between Apollonius and Jesus (eg: healing the sick, performing miracles) and it has been suggested that Apollonius was the prototype for the Paul of the Bible. What struck me when reading this book was how easily miracles are ascribed to Apollonius. If one believes this then the question arises why Apollonius isn't revered just as much as Jesus. And if one doesn't believe the tales of miracles in this book then why should one give any credence to similar stories in the bible?
My review is about the $16.90 edition The Life of Apollonius of Tyana.
Another fascinating book from antiquity is The Syrian Goddess: De Dea Syria. Primary texts from antiquity are so rare that no one interested in the matter should give a single one a miss.
